Verifying a power of attorney has been registered

There are two ways to verify if a power of attorney (PoA) has been registered with OPG. It will depend on whether the documents were submitted for registration via EPOAR (our electronic facility) or by post.

Verification / activation codes

We do not provide verification codes as they are not necessary for registered Scottish Continuing and/or Welfare Powers of Attorneys. A verification code may be required to view a Lasting Power of Attorney online but is not required for PoAs registered at this office.

EPOAR on-line verification

EPOAR has an online verification facility that allows organisations presented with an electronically produced certificate of registration to verify that the document has been registered with OPG.

  • There is no need to register to use this service
  • There is no fee for using this service
  • To access the relevant information, the end user needs to have the certificate of registration in front of them.
  • The notes section detailed on the certificate will provide the link: https://epoar.publicguardian-scotland.gov.uk which will allow verification.

Please contact opg@scotcourts.gov.uk with any queries regarding the validity of a certificate.

Verifying a PoA has been registered

To verify if a PoA has been registered you can ask us to search of the public register by completing our form.

Please provide as much personal information as possible about the person who is the subject of the search.

The public register is held electronically and maintained in real time and is available for inspection during normal office hours e.g. 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday excluding bank and public holidays.

While we aim to process individual search requests within five working days there may be times when it takes longer.
