Asking for consent to use the adult’s funds

Sep 04, 2019

Financial guardians often ask us to consent to using the adult’s funds to make a purchase for the adult but consent doesn’t always need to be sought.

Consent is not required when 1) the adult will benefit directly from their funds being used and 2) when the guardian has referred to and applied the principles of the Act and determined that the purchase is appropriate.

Guardians must always ask for consent before making the purchase when there is either a possible benefit or no obvious benefit to the adult.
